An SF1 or SF2 label is only the starting point. It identifies the strip-footing type and shows where it runs, but it does not provide every construction requirement. A strip footing is a continuous reinforced concrete foundation beneath a load-bearing wall. It supports the wall, spreads the load and transfers it into suitable ground. To read the detail, first locate SF1 or SF2 on the footing plan, then open the referenced detail sheet. Identify the wall above, the footing body and the founding level. Next, check the reinforcement notes, including bars, ties, cogs and any references to the footing schedule. Service restrictions are also critical. The detail may show areas where trenching or service lines are not permitted because they could weaken the footing’s support. Always return to the footing schedule to confirm project-specific dimensions and reinforcement. Plan = location. Detail = construction rules.
