Body lotion feels like an easy sustainable win, the front's all recycled and natural. But turn one round and there's more going on. Most of it is water, so you're buying and binning a fresh plastic bottle every month. Most are built on mineral oil, a fossil ingredient, rather than plant oils that actually grow. Plenty carry silicones that wash off down the drain and don't really break down. And almost none tell you how the ingredients are sourced. Here's day 34 of the swap series, on the Waitrose shelf. And to be fair: mineral oil does work, and "natural" isn't automatically greener. So the answer isn't the word natural, it's what you can actually check. Two we'd pick, for two reasons: 🌿 THE EASY ONE — Faith in Nature Hand & Body 400ml On the shelf, about the same price as the rest. 100% recycled bottle you can recycle again. Plant oils, not mineral oil. B Corp, Leaping Bunny cruelty-free, Vegan Society, made in the UK. £8 / 400ml (£2 per 100ml). Their 5L refill (£65, faithinnature.co.uk) holds about 12.5 bottles, so you top up at home for less plastic and less money (~£1.30 per 100ml). 🏆 THE TOP OF THE CLASS — Weleda Skin Food Body Lotion Not in store on the day, but on waitrose.com. Costs a bit more, but no mineral oil or silicone (NATRUE certified), vegan, cruelty-free (NATRUE bans animal testing), in a 97% recycled bottle. Weleda are a B Corp and UEBT "sourcing with respect" certified, an independent check on how they source every ingredient that almost no shelf brand carries. No refill option though, that's Faith in Nature's edge. £18.70 / 250ml (£7.48 per 100ml), often reduced (was £12.46 in store). For comparison, per 100ml at regular prices: Neutrogena £1.39, Dove £1.50, Nivea £2.00, E45 £2.25, Aveeno £3.42. So Faith in Nature (£2) sits mid-shelf, not the expensive option people assume, and the 5L refill (£1.30) undercuts most of them. (Several are on Save 1/3 right now, so lower in store today.)
