On a box of eggs, free range is defined in law. On a bottle of milk, anyone can just print it. So I went to Tesco to work out what each badge actually tells you. RED TRACTOR British milk, audited to UK standards. A genuine scheme. But it sets no minimum time outdoors, so a Red Tractor cow can be kept inside all year and the badge doesn't change. FREE RANGE, or COWS FREE TO GRAZE Nothing. Neither is a defined term on milk. No number behind it, nothing to check, no scheme anyone has to answer to. B CORP The whole company audited, on workers, governance, community and environment. Tells you nothing about how the milk was farmed. ORGANIC Protected in law, so nobody can print it without being certified. No synthetic fertiliser, tighter rules on antibiotics, and the cows have to graze. The only grazing guarantee in the aisle. WHAT I'D PUT IN THE TROLLEY 🥇 Tesco Organic Whole, 4 pints. £1.08 a litre. The cheapest way into the only badge that answers the farming question. 🥈 Yeo Valley Organic, 2L. £1.58 a litre. Same certification, just dearer. 🥉 Tesco British Whole, 4 pints. 77p a litre. No organic, but the one bottle here carrying a fair price promise to farmers. GO ONE FURTHER Minor Figures Barista Oat, £2.20 a litre. If carbon is your question, one oat milk in the rotation moves more than every badge above. COULDN'T FIT IN Organic isn't only Soil Association. SOPA and OF&G are the same legal standard. Look for the code on the pack, GB-ORG and a number, not the logo you happen to recognise. B Corp isn't worthless, by the way. It's the only audit there covering workers, governance and community. A different question, not a lesser one. Rodda's is a certified B Corp on 112.6, where a typical business scores about 50. It's a West Country line, so look for a B Corp dairy near you rather than that exact bottle. And that Yeo Valley carton still says recycle at a recycling point. From this year English councils have to take cartons kerbside, so the pack is behind the rules.
