The problem with chewing gum: the "gum base" on a standard packet is a synthetic plastic made from oil, the same type used in car tyres, glue and sealants. And UK labelling law lets them bundle all of it under those two words, so the packet never has to tell you. Because it's synthetic it doesn't biodegrade, which is why spat-out gum sits on pavements for years and costs UK councils around £7m a year to scrape off. The swap on the Waitrose shelf: 🌿 Nuud Plastic Free Gum, £1.50 for 9 pieces, about 17p a piece. The gum base is chicle, a natural tree sap, not the synthetic stuff. Plant-based, plastic-free, and a certified B Corp. It was also the first plastic-free gum the Oral Health Foundation ever approved, so you lose nothing on the dental side. Cardboard box, no plastic wrapper. Yes it's more per piece than a standard packet, but it isn't plastic, and the box isn't either. For comparison, a standard 10-piece packet of Extra or Airwaves is around 80p, about 8p a piece. So Nuud is roughly double per chew, but it's plant-based, not plastic. Can't get to a Waitrose? A few other plant-based ones, all plastic-free: Milliways, about £1 to £1.25 for a 30-piece pack in the big supermarkets, the cheapest plastic-free pack here (the pieces are smaller). True Gum, around £2.50 for a 14-piece pack at Holland & Barrett. Chewsy, a 10-piece pack, online and in refill shops. The rule for the gum aisle: if the ingredients just say "gum base", that's the synthetic stuff. Look for chicle or plant-based instead.
