Peanut butter only needs one ingredient. Peanuts. So it's worth knowing what else ends up in the jar. The cheapest jars use palm oil as a stabiliser, so it doesn't separate and you never have to stir. That's the only reason it's there. And it isn't just the budget end: one of the organic jars here has Soil Association certification, pine trees on the label, an orangutan charity on the front, and organic sustainable palm oil in the ingredients. Certified palm isn't the worst of the trade, but in Indonesia palm plantations were the biggest cause of deforestation from 2001 to 2016, about 23% of it. That has fallen a long way since, but it's still why the ingredients list is worth a look. Cheat sheet, cheapest per kilo: 🥉 Waitrose 100% Peanuts Smooth, 340g £7.21/kg. Ingredients: roasted peanuts. That's the whole list. No palm oil, no added sugar or salt, cheapest one-ingredient jar. 🥈 Meridian Smooth, 280g £10.54/kg. First nut butter brand independently certified palm oil free (POFCAP). Roasted in Wrexham. Glass jar, steel cap, paper labels, all recyclable. 🥇 Pip & Nut Smooth, 300g £12.17/kg. A certified B Corp, so the whole business is audited, not just the recipe. Single-origin peanuts, no palm oil, glass jar, made in the UK, 10% of profits to charity. 🏆 Go one further ManiLife Deep Roast 900g tub, £10/kg. (Correction!) Cheaper per kilo than Meridian or Pip & Nut, and one tub instead of three jars, though the Waitrose one still undercuts it. Plastic tub not glass. ManiLife are a B Corp too. ❌ Leave Any jar with palm oil and cane sugar in the ingredients, cheapest on the shelf or organic one with trees on it. Worth knowing that same brand's 100% jar is palm-free, so it's the organic version specifically that isn't. Not in Waitrose?
