Instead of being damaged, the floating toys travel smoothly through the rotating screws, demonstrating how gently the system moves objects with the water. Each Archimedes screw pump slowly rotates inside a trough, trapping water between its spiral flights and carrying it uphill with every revolution. Because the screws operate at relatively low speeds and move water in a continuous flow, fish and other aquatic life can often pass through with far less risk of injury than with many conventional pump designs. The Kolding pump-sluice facility was built to help protect the municipality and harbor from storm surges and flooding while maintaining a fish-friendly method of moving large volumes of water. Combining centuries-old Archimedes screw technology with modern flood-control engineering allows the system to manage extreme water events while reducing impacts on the surrounding ecosystem.
