Pouring hot water directly over the connection causes much of the buildup to quickly dissolve and wash away. Battery-terminal corrosion can contain sulfate salts and other compounds produced by reactions involving battery acid, moisture, and the metals around the connection. Many of these deposits are water-soluble, while warmer water generally speeds the dissolving and flushing process. Removing corrosion helps restore a cleaner electrical connection, but water alone does not address whatever caused the buildup. After the terminal is safely cleaned and dried, checking the battery for leakage or venting and protecting the connection with an appropriate terminal protectant can help reduce future corrosion.
