The 1960s anvil responds with a muted thud, while the 1980s anvil produces a much sharper metallic ring. An anvil’s sound is influenced by its material, construction, hardness, geometry, mounting, and overall condition. A hard steel face can vibrate and rebound efficiently, while softer materials, loose components, cracks, or different construction methods can damp those vibrations and produce a duller response. That difference in sound can reveal useful clues about how an anvil was made and how efficiently it returns energy to the hammer. However, a clear ring alone does not prove an anvil is higher quality or structurally sound, making rebound and surface condition important tests as well. No copyright infringement intended.
