Hook
i had this server that i used to work with his name was brett, and i called him the unflinching server because he could not be broken. and i'm sure you guys have all worked with someone like that. they walk in and they're like, and you're like, dude, it's it's and they're just, they're just annoying. they're just always in a great mood. and so one day, i'm standing at the computer, then over at the a table, a little two-top, a gentleman who got sat there by himself. brett walks up and he's like, "hi, welcome. it's before he his first sentence, the guy goes, "iced tea." and then brett goes, "okay. do you want a lemon with your the guy's like, "i want a lemon with my iced tea. it's an iced tea. did i say no lemon?" and brett goes, you know, thinking about a dumb question. iced tea, lemon, i'll be right back. and so brett goes in the kitchen. i walk in the kitchen. i'm like, "are you okay?" that was a little intense." and he's like, "preston, he's having a bad day. don't worry about it." i was like, "okay." half hour later, i'm on another computer and i look over across and i see brett and this guy, and they're laughing together. and i'm like, "damn, brett ju- it just blows my mind. he just did it again. the gentleman was leaving and he walks up and "are you the manager?" "i am." he goes, "i just want to let you know that brett is not only one of the most fantastic servers i ever had, he's the most fantastic human being i've ever met." and i was like, "oh my god, thank you so much." he goes, "no, no. i had someone me in my family recently pass away about 10 days ago. i have not smiled once since that day. today was the first day that someone allowed me to smile. i just want to say thank you. you know, brett's an amazing person and it still sends chills down my spine knowing that moment. because even in that moment, i judged that guest. to ju- how dare server like that, you don't put, you don't put your finger up like that. are? you don't disrespect us like that, 'cause that's our ego just gets in the way of everything. study your ego. study about egos. egos are designed to take you down. it starts poking, it protects your psyche. it puts your psyche in a little safe zone so you can be protected so you're special. and so it'll tell you certain people can't talk to you a certain way, it starts creating rules that are invisible to everyone else, which sounds, out loud, a little bit crazy. so we have to make not here to judge to judge our coworkers. we're here to give the guest the best experience possible. are we gonna bat guys? are we gonna have a+ days every single day? you can try, but what you can do is just try. understand it. get back on the horse, right? know what's important.
