Widow’s Supper • 1954 The house is quieter now. The children have finished their homework, the dishes from breakfast are finally put away, and tomorrow’s bills are waiting on the kitchen table. Supper still has to be made. In the 1950s, many widows had to stretch every dollar while learning to carry the weight of an entire household on their own. Meals were often built around inexpensive pantry staples that could be filling, comforting, and make the grocery money last. Tonight’s supper—salmon patties, mashed potatoes, buttered peas, and white bread—is inspired by the kinds of practical meals many American families relied on during that era. Sometimes history isn’t found in the headlines. Sometimes it’s found in an ordinary supper that helped someone make it through another day. Cooked in my @Lodge Cast Iron USA skillet with @Chicken of the Sea salmon and @Del Monte Foods peas. ❤️ #CookingThroughTheDecades #1954 #VintageCooking #FoodHistory #SalmonPatties
