Mom didn't have anything except a bunch of kids. Mom and daddy got married very, very young. And of course, mama, she was the kind of person that just could tell you anything and make it sound good. Cooking anything and make it taste good. I remember this one time, it was Christmas time and of course, the church had their little house of prayer. And I guess the church had thrown in a little grab bag because everybody around, everybody around, all the parts were very poor. So everybody was gonna get a little Christmas present. Even the grown-ups, the women and, you know, especially the kids. So I remember this one time that mama had so many kids that they were given all of mama's kids, all of the presents out. And I remember one lady saying, well, you don't mind, will you? Because you had so many kids, they got so many of the presents out. And I remember mama over there sitting on the bench crying. She didn't make any noise. She didn't make any noise. But I went over and I said, Mama, you can have mine. She said, no, no, honey, I don't want yours. But I love you because of your good heart.

Today’s recipe is a little tribute to the life and legacy of Dolly Parton. 💗 I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to honor her than by going back to her East Tennessee roots and making one of the foods she remembered from childhood: her mama’s old fashioned banana pudding. Dolly grew up one of 12 children in the mountains of East Tennessee, where her mother, Avie Lee, had a whole houseful of children to feed. Dolly once shared that banana pudding was especially exciting when she was little. So much of what went into it could come straight from their farm, but the bananas came from neighbors nearby. And this wasn’t the instant pudding version many of us know today. It was made the old fashioned way, with custard cooked on the stove, layers of vanilla wafers and bananas, and a meringue piled on top and baked until golden. Years later, Dolly and her sister Rachel would still talk about banana pudding as one of those recipes they would always have, no matter how much life changed. There’s something beautiful about that. Long before the rhinestones, the songs, the movies and everything else that made Dolly Dolly, there was a little girl in the Tennessee mountains getting excited because Mama was making banana pudding.
