And to my mom who kicked me out when I was 16 and had nowhere to go, I'm entering my first day of nursing school. To all those people who treated me like a prisoner, like a troubled kid in those group homes, I'm entering my first day of nursing school. To all my family members who closed their doors on me when I needed them, I'm entering my first day of nursing school now. What's up? I am so proud of you, and more importantly, you should be so proud of you. But if I can be honest, when you're the first person in your family to break generational curses and start building that generational wealth, there are gonna be people who are knocking on your door asking for money. So let's have a conversation on how to handle that. For the haters who suddenly want a relationship with you, that's easy. Just say no. That's a complete sentence and you don't owe these people anything. The harder conversation is actually with the friends who were there that you want to help. My recommendation is to gift, never lend. Loaning money between friends always leads to resentment when one person can't pay it back. So what I encourage you to do is when you're ready, set a budget for how much you're willing to give every single year. And when I say give, it means you're not getting that money back. Once you hit your annual gift max, the faucet turns off. "Sorry, I'd love to help but I've hit my annual budget for helping friends & family, happy to revisit in XYZ amount of time / when I feel more stable in my financial security." As someone going into nursing, I'm guessing you're a pretty selfless guy, but I need you to put yourself first here. Your own oxygen mask on before helping others.
