Wimbledon isn't greedy and it PAYS OFF Wimbledon might be the poshest tennis tournament in the world, but it's also surprisingly the most affordable to attend. In fact, it's designed to be that way. You can't resell they're doled out via a lottery system and printed with your name on it. Scalp tickets get cancelled, which means no $2,000, $80 ticket markup. Prices stay close to what regular people can actually pay. Secondly, the food. Contrary to the pricing at literally every other sporting event, the food at Wimbledon is still priced like a snack, not a mortgage. The iconic strawberries and cream: £2.70, seventy pence. And third, no private equity. There's nobody in the back trying to squeeze every last cent out of the profit margins. It's run by a private members club, the All England Lawn Tennis Club. And a huge chunk of the money made actually goes back into supporting British tennis. Wimbledon makes nearly half of its money via TV broadcast rights. And to grow the business, raises capital via debentures, aka where investors receive guaranteed prime view tickets along with exclusive VIP hospitality access in exchange for lending the All England Lawn Tennis Club money for a five-year period. In fact, Wimbledon deliberately leaves tens of millions on the table every year by not having title sponsors or courtside logos. Nothing but grass, tradition and Pimm's. The most prestigious event chose the least greedy business model, and turns out that's exactly why it works.
