The youths are finally learning what immigrant families have known for generations, living with your parents is the ultimate financial lifeline because instead of paying rent with money, you get to pay with your mental health. In all seriousness, nearly half of all young adults currently live with their parents. So let's talk about the three money moves you need to make right now to take full advantage of this time so that you can be well ahead of your peers who don't live at home. One, pay yourself rent. When you live at home, you're either doing so for free or typically below market rent, but I need you to pretend like you have a traditional rent payment. So set up an auto transfer of a couple hundred bucks every single month into a high-yielding savings account. This helps to build the habit of a housing payment without the actual housing payment and when you're ready to move out, you're going to have a robust emergency fund. Two, employer 41k match, take it. HSA, take it. Any workplace perk, gym stipend, tuition reimbursement, commuter benefit, use all of it now while your expenses are low. This is the cheapest season of your adult life to build wealth. Make sure you're spending your money on things that are going to make future you rich. And three, set out a move out number, not a move out date. Maybe it's three months of expenses saved or a certain investment account balance, tie your move out to a financial milestone, not social pressure. That way when you do move out, you're not eating PB&J's for half the month. The goal isn't to move out fast, it's to move out ready.
