She walks into an embassy in Germany and gives birth to you inside. Are you American? No. The U.S. embassy is not U.S. territory. Your mother's a German citizen. She walks into a U.S. military base in Germany and gives birth to you there. American? No. A U.S. military base overseas is not U.S. territory either. A French citizen. You're born on an American flagged cruise ship in the middle of the North Atlantic. American? No. An American flag does not make that ship U.S. territory. Question 4. Are you an American citizen? Your mother's a Mexican citizen. She's flying from Mexico to Canada. She gives birth while the airplane is directly over Kansas. American? Yes. You're born in U.S. airspace over U.S. territory, and regardless of the airline she's flying, she's a U.S. citizen. Question 5. Are you an American citizen? British citizen. Panamanian flagged cruise ship, but it's docked in Miami. She gives birth on the ship. American? Yes. The ship is within U.S. territory. The flag of the ship doesn't control. Question 6. Are you an American citizen? Your mother's a Colombian citizen. She gives birth in Puerto Rico. American? Yes. You're a citizen at birth. Born on U.S. territory. Question 7.
