How to stop giving someone one more chance. Like a leader, not a manager. Well, number one is, stop resetting the clock. Alright. A manager says, alright, well let's, let's just give this a little more time. But a leader says, look, we've had this conversation before. I wanna be honest. That this pattern has continued. Every time that you address the same behaviour without acknowledging the history, you are teaching that person that the standard is going to keep on moving. So we can ask, like, can we review what we previously agreed would change and what has happened since then? If I have a deadline and every time it comes up, I just continue to move it, well, eventually that stops being a deadline. But number two is we wanna find out what keeps getting in the way. And this is where we get curious. But a manager says, this is your last chance. But a leader says, look, before we decide on the next step, I wanna understand why the commitment that we've made hasn't turned into consistent action. Repeating a warning without diagnosing the breakdown, that rarely changes the results. What's preventing you from following through on what we agreed on? And maybe this is a system problem. Right, that's the James clear. You don't rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your system. Maybe it's a system breakdown that we can diagnose and then rebuild. Then number three is we wanna replace another chance with a clear commitment. Say a manager says, okay, well, I'm willing to give you one more opportunity. But a leader is very clear here. Let's get clear on what must change, what support you need, and how we'll know whether the commitment has been met. See, compassion here isn't endlessly extending the timeline. No, it's giving someone clarity, support and ownership before deciding what comes next. What are you committed to by when, and then what support will help you follow through? Where a manager continues to just give chance after chance, a leader turns these repeated conversations into clarity, support, ownership and accountability so they actually follow through on their commitments. And look, leadership is not a title, right? It's a fire. And we have the opportunity to ignite it, not only in ourselves, but in others.
