All three use the same currency — Avios — and every 10,000 Amex points you transfer becomes 13,000 Avios. Here's what the math looks like. ✈️ New York, Chicago, or Washington DC → Madrid. From 16,000 Avios each way. That's 32,000 Avios round trip. ✈️ Miami, Dallas, or Los Angeles → Madrid. From 20,000 Avios each way. That's 40,000 Avios round trip. Price the most expensive gateway on that list and you're at 40,000 Avios, which at the standard 1:1 rate would cost you 40,000 Amex points. With the bonus, 31,000 Amex points becomes 40,300 Avios. Same flight, 9,000 fewer points. Taxes and fees are separate, but they're reasonable — usually around $100 each way. And look at LAX. Eleven hours nonstop to Madrid for 20,000 Avios each way, because Iberia charges the same from the West Coast as it does from Miami and Dallas. Same points, twice the flight.
