Have you heard the news? Have you heard the news and the government's new plan? Oh, the government has announced new plans to make subscriptions easier to cancel. Basically getting out of them should be a lot more cheap, lot more easier than what it is at the moment. It's got me thinking about another household bill. So your T.V. Licence. So because it's now £180 per year. But do we actually need to have one? Here's the bit that catches people out. So read from my screen you need a T.V. Licence in order to watch or record live T.V. And that doesn't just mean BBC or ITV. YouTube you're watching live T.V., you need one. Amazon Prime if you're watching sports, you need one. Live sports. So even if something's been shown live on Netflix, you do need one. And if you use BBC iPlayer at all, live or on demand, you need one too. But here's the thing. If you don't watch any live T.V. You only watch things on demand on services like Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, I.T.V.X. You currently don't need a licence for that. And if you generally don't need one anymore, you can tell T.V. Licensing that you don't need a licence rather than just continue to pay it. But here's where it gets really interesting. So the way we actually watch television in the U.K. is changing massively, so the Government is currently viewing the future direction of U.K. Broadcasting, including the BBC or audience audiences increasingly moving towards streaming and online video. So there's a much bigger conversation happening around the system built around traditional television and how it works in this streaming age. So that does not mean Netflix users are silly going to be paying for T.V. Licence. There is no confirmed rule saying that. But it does raise the interesting question if more and more households stop watching traditional television and are entirely streaming. How should we fund public service in broadcasting future? Do we keep the T.V. Licence, scrap it or replace it with something completely different? What would you do?
