I wish someone had explained referencing to me like this but think of your sources as your academically qualified besties. You make your argument → bring in research that backs you up → then invite that one brutally honest bestie who says “okay…but have you considered this?” 👀 THAT disagreement is where you can start showing critical analysis. Don’t just throw in the opposing source and move on. Evaluate it. What does it get right? What does it miss? Does it weaken your argument? Then bring in further evidence and explain why your position still stands. Your references shouldn’t just sit next to each other. They should be having a conversation and YOU should be leading it. My personal rule of thumb was roughly 1 reference per 50 - 100 words; it pushed me to properly evidence my claims.
