Sometimes people don’t understand what they had until the person who kept choosing them finally stops. You were there through the busy days, the difficult conversations, the uncertainty, and all the moments when walking away probably would’ve been easier. You kept making room for them in your life because, to you, they weren’t just another option—they were your person. And that’s why it hurts when you realize you weren’t being chosen with that same certainty. It doesn’t mean your partner should abandon their friends, family, ambitions, or entire life for you. Healthy love leaves room for all of those things. But there’s a difference between having a full life and repeatedly making the person you claim to love feel like they’re somewhere near the bottom of it. Eventually, someone gets tired of asking for time, effort, reassurance, and basic consideration. They stop competing for a place they thought they already had. And if you miss them once they’re gone, remember that sometimes people don’t leave because they stopped loving you. Sometimes they leave because they finally understood that loving you with their whole heart wasn’t enough to make you choose them the same way. The saddest part is that by the time you finally decide to prioritize what you had, they may have already learned how to prioritize themselves.
