When you find out your constant throat clearing isn't allergies, it's pepsin. 🌿 If antihistamines never touched it, here's the reason. The culprit is often pepsin, the digestive enzyme that rides up with refluxate and settles into the delicate tissue of your throat. Allergy meds do nothing for it because there's no allergen to block. Here's the part that explains the "why won't it stop." A 2007 study found pepsin is most active in acidic conditions and goes quiet at higher pH, but it stays stable up in the throat and reactivates the moment things turn acidic again. So one episode can keep irritating for hours. 📚 Johnston et al. 2007, Laryngoscope (PMID 17417109) So the goal isn't only less acid, it's giving pepsin fewer chances to reach your throat and to re-activate. Three high-impact places to start: The 3-Hour Buffer. No food in the 3 hours before bed (beverages are fine). Lying down on a full stomach gives refluxate, and the pepsin with it, an easy path up overnight. Tone the LES and calm your nervous system. Pepsin only reaches your throat when contents slip past your lower esophageal sphincter, the valve coordinated by your vagus nerve. In fight-or-flight, that coordination weakens, and there's a real reflux-stress loop (people with LPR report notably higher stress than those without it, Barillari 2025, PMID 40258993). The LES Lock is my go-to: 1 to 5 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing with 360 ribcage expansion right after meals, up to 5x daily. It strengthens the crural diaphragm that supports your LES and shifts you into rest-and-digest, so fewer reflux events carry less pepsin up. Mind the re-acidifiers. Pepsin wakes back up when things turn acidic, so constant grazing and acidic sips keep re-triggering it. Fuller, spaced-out meals give the tissue longer quiet stretches to settle. Save this if your "allergies" have never once responded to allergy meds. Follow for more. 💚 Small hinges swing big doors. 🌿 #SilentReflux #LPR #AcidReflux #Pepsin #RefluxRelief [throat clearing pepsin, silent reflux throat, LPR allergies, LES lock breathing, chronic throat clearing]
