I tracked every bite for longer than I want to admit, and I still could not tell you why some days burned and some days didn't. What I was not tracking was everything underneath the food. Reflux can be a nervous system issue. It can be a motility issue, where the stomach empties slower than it should and the meal sits. It can be an anatomical one, where the sphincter and the diaphragm around it stop lining up, which is what a hiatal hernia changes. Food influences all three without being the origin of any of them. In a case-control study of 45 people with throat reflux and 29 healthy controls, perceived stress scores were significantly higher in the reflux group, 21.62 versus 13.90 (Barillari et al. 2025, PMID 40258993). Cross-sectional, so it shows the association rather than the direction. The same meal lands differently depending on the body it lands in. Food still matters and it is worth getting right. It was just never the whole system, which is why the list can keep shrinking while the symptoms stay. Food is not the enemy here. Here is what I teach our clients. The 5+1 Method before meals, five slow breaths and one moment of gratitude before the first bite. Then the LES Lock, 1 to 5 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing immediately after meals, up to 5x daily. If you have spent months taking foods away trying to fix this, you are allowed to grieve them. You are also allowed to start adding some back. My free Reflux Revolution guide is in my bio.
