There’s a particular kind of heartbreak that happens when you realize you’re no longer asking someone to give you anything—you’ve reached the point where you’re practically asking for permission to keep giving to them. You aren’t begging for flowers, dates, constant attention, or some perfect version of love. You’re saying, “Please just let me be here. Let me care about you. Let me support you. Let me love you without constantly making me feel like my love is something you have to escape from.” And that’s when you have to ask yourself how the relationship became so one-sided that even your affection started feeling unwanted. Love shouldn’t feel like standing outside someone’s door with your heart in your hands, trying to convince them to open it. Of course, sometimes people pull away because they’re overwhelmed, emotionally unavailable, struggling personally, or simply no longer capable of participating in the relationship. That doesn’t necessarily make them cruel. But you also can’t love someone into being ready to receive you. You can be patient, communicate, and give someone space, but eventually their distance becomes an answer you have to respect. Maybe the final straw isn’t realizing they wouldn’t love you the way you wanted. Maybe it’s realizing you’ve been fighting just for the privilege of continuing to love someone who keeps asking—through their actions—for you to stop. And as painful as that is, sometimes the most loving thing left to do is finally listen
