If you went to school in the 90s, your brain saved a very specific collection of memories forever. 🎒 THE NIGHT BEFORE SCHOOL You had your first-day outfit laid out on the bed like you were about to attend a red carpet event. Backpack packed. Shoes ready. Supplies organized. And somehow you still couldn’t sleep because finding out who was in your class felt like the most important information you would ever receive. ✏️ SCHOOL SUPPLIES WERE SERIOUS BUSINESS The 64-pack of crayons with the built-in sharpener was wealth. Multicolor click pens were a status symbol. Scented markers smelled good enough that nobody was actually using them for their intended purpose. And one missing piece could turn your mechanical pencil into garbage immediately. 💌 BEFORE TEXTING, WE HAD NOTES We were passing folded pieces of notebook paper across entire classrooms under teacher surveillance. Somehow everybody knew how to fold them into those little triangles and squares too. Nobody taught us. The knowledge was simply passed down. 📚 THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE The overhead projector was basically cutting-edge technology. The teacher turned the lights off and suddenly everybody was having a great day. Then there were multiplication worksheets capable of producing genuine fear. But if the teacher brought out the colorful counting pieces, blocks, bears, or whatever those things were, we knew we weren’t doing real work for at least 20 minutes. 🎨 WE ALL DID THE SAME WEIRD STUFF Everybody drew that S. Nobody knows where it came from. Nobody knows who started it. Somehow every elementary school in America received the instructions. And seeing your finished artwork sitting on that giant drying rack made you feel like your work was about to be displayed at the Louvre. 🎶 THE RECORDER At some point, schools across America decided every child needed to know how to play Hot Cross Buns on a recorder. I’m 35 and still waiting for the situation where this training becomes useful. 🏃 GYM CLASS WAS A DIFFERENT WORLD Scooter boards were basically Lamborghinis. Those mesh pinnies smelled like 400 children. And getting whipped in the ankle with a plastic jump rope could immediately end whatever fun you were having. Nobody stopped gym class though. You walked it off. 🚌 THE SCHOOL BUS Resting your head against that freezing cold window on the ride home was one of life’s great pleasures. And if you sat in the back, every speed bump became a theme park ride. The bus driver would yell at everyone to sit down as 12 children simultaneously became airborne. 🍕 AND THEN THERE WAS SCHOOL LUNCH Rectangular pizza. Chocolate milk. Those little ice cream cups. And the wooden spoon that made every bite taste slightly like a Home Depot. Opening the milk carton correctly was also a skill some of us never mastered. You’d pull one side too hard and suddenly you were drinking milk out of a mangled piece of cardboard. None of these things sound particularly exciting now. But put them all together and somehow this was just… school. And looking at these pictures, I swear I can smell half of them.
