ANOTHER POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY MISUSING FLOCK CAMERAS

This morning, those controversial license plate tracking cameras made by Flock, back in the spotlight. A Massachusetts police officer on leave at risk of losing his job and possibly facing criminal charges for allegedly abusing the technology. The Stow Police Department says Officer Jason Rogers improperly accessed information from the Flock database five different times. The highly scrutinized Flock cameras automatically photograph every passing vehicle into a database that officers can search without a warrant. A fight now brewing in one Ohio community over the technology. The county commissioner calling for the Lucas County Sheriff's Department to pause its use of Flock cameras until an audit can determine what legal authority officers are using to access the data and how to protect residents from mass surveillance. This is mass surveillance at scale. The sheriff, defiant, calling the technology a game changer. "License plate readers have been a 'game changer' ..." There have been multiple reports across the country of law enforcement misusing the database, including using them to stalk women. Critics calling these cameras an invasion of privacy.
