SKETCHING A TORNADO

Tap the link in my bio to start the drawing drills course ! Even something as chaotic as a tornado can be simplified into basic forms. Start with a cone. Then bend it. That modified cone gives you the overall direction, movement, and volume of the tornado before you ever worry about clouds, debris, or texture. From there, wrap elliptical lines around the form and use curved hatching that follows the same rotation. Now every mark reinforces the twisting three-dimensional structure underneath. This is why learning simple forms is so powerful. You’re not memorizing how to draw a tornado. You’re learning how to take forms you already understand, modify them, and use them to construct something you’ve never drawn before. That’s the skill that eventually unlocks drawing from imagination.
