YOUR CROSS HATCHING

Your crosshatching likely looks flat because you're taking the term crosshatching too literally. A pass of straight lines, keeping them evenly spaced and parallel, but then when you cross your hatches, you decide to literally create crosses at 90 degrees. Don't do this. This flattens the form. Let's draw the same artichoke again, but this time approach taking your time, your lines wrapping across the contour of the form. Time to cross your hatches. Use a 45 degree angle or less. You should see beautiful little diamonds in negative space. This creates that same grid, but in perspective. It's just a style difference.
