Tap the link in my bio to start the drawing drills course. Don’t let your hatch marks travel in random directions. Make them describe the form. Cross contour lines wrap around the surface of an object, showing your eye exactly how that surface curves, turns, and changes direction in space. So while you’re building light and shadow, you’re also reinforcing the three-dimensional structure underneath. That’s what makes cross contour hatching so useful. Every line does two jobs at once: it creates value and describes volume. Once you start thinking this way, hatching stops being decoration and becomes part of the construction.

If you feel direction your crosshatches it's likely you're just choosing them at random instead of lines that describe what the forms in space there's an infinite number can use few that describe the planes. Now let's draw the same rock use cross hatching. Each segment of lines shifts direction direction that the plane is facing. It's like tightly wrapping with a wire. Cross hatching has the ability to darken and shade an area but it can also be used to describe what the form's surface is doing. Once it's finished I add red to show how the line is always perpendicular to the direction that the plane want to learn how to use their fullest potential.
