The Americans want Canada to get rid of French. That was one of the takeaway points from why the trade negotiations failed. And it's not that they've requested. This is actually identified in a very large document from the US last year. If you want to read the 400 page document, you can. It's the 2025 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers. But in that report, there's a whole bunch of stuff that includes things they don't like. They don't like the C.R.T.C. gets to determine who is a journalist and what a news organization is. They don't like our supply management, the composition of our cheese or that we won't sell their seeds. They don't like how we collect duties at our border services. But there's also this paragraph and this paragraph is specifically about Quebec's Bill 96 in Quebec to do with using French language. This bill came into effect in 2022, although we've had language laws longer than that. And the French language since the 1600s. But in this, it also says that in 2024, they were trying to encourage the Quebec provincial government to take into consideration business sector concerns and involve US businesses in drafting further interpretive guidance on the law and final regulation. But Carney took it a step further and I'm gonna show you a clip from his press conference here because he details and says this was an attack, an attack in a war on the French language, Quebecois and Canada. Jamais acceptable. à cause ça c'est euh, c'est le fin de, uh, set the tap, uh, the negotiations. There is no way that Canada would ever agree to an attack on the French language. It is who we are. And the US thinks they the culture of other countries is abhorrent.
