I believe the clinical term is “girl, what is going ON.” 😭 Because somehow every one of those feelings completely contradicts the one before it and yet makes perfect sense when you’re actually living it. You miss him, but you don’t miss the relationship you had. You don’t want him back because you remember exactly why it ended, but some part of you still wants the imaginary future where both of you grew up, fixed everything, met again at the perfect time, and somehow got it right. If he texted tonight saying, “I want you back,” you’d probably stare at the message for twenty minutes, feel your entire heart drop, and then say no because nothing has actually changed. But if someone asks whether you’re ready to date somebody else? Absolutely not. 😭 And maybe that’s because moving on isn’t a switch. Sometimes your mind accepts an ending long before your heart figures out where to put all the love that remains. You can know somebody isn’t right for you right now while still loving them. You can miss someone without wanting the version of them you actually experienced back. You can even secretly hope life brings you together again someday without making that hope your plan. The important part is not confusing potential with reality. Don’t build your present around an imaginary future where they eventually become everything you needed. If you wouldn’t say yes to who they are today, then today your answer is no—and that’s enough. You don’t have to immediately date someone else to prove you’ve moved on either. Maybe you’re simply in that strange middle chapter where you no longer belong together, but your heart hasn’t learned how to imagine belonging with anyone else yet. And unfortunately, I think the actual name for that is just… healing.
