Scientists have made protein biscuits from plastic bottles which could be a game-changer for countries suffering from food shortages. Researchers at Southern Illinois University, working on a NASA-backed food project, have used specially programmed yeast microbes to turn PET plastic and agricultural waste into edible food ingredients. The resulting protein-rich biscuits, dubbed µBites (“microbites”), contain ingredients including proteins, fats and acids made from waste materials. The mixture was then combined with fiber, starch and sweetener before being shaped using a 3D printer. The researchers say the technology could eventually provide food in disaster zones, submarines and even future missions to the Moon or Mars, while tackling plastic waste at the same time. The biscuits have been deemed safe to eat, but there's one important catch: scientists haven't actually tasted them yet.
