Why it worked

The video taps into a relatable and often frustrating topic for homeowners and those in the construction industry, posing a question that sparks curiosity and encourages engagement in the comments section.

Summary

Two individuals discuss which decade built the worst homes, concluding it was the 1970s and 1980s due to rapid, speculative building, cost-cutting, and questionable new materials. They specifically highlight the poor quality of framing during that era.

Which decade built the worst homes? 70s and 80s without a doubt. Without a doubt. Why? The 80s, you know, those were wild times. Wild people doing wild things and certainly in construction, those guys were doing wild things right? Probably on the job too, you know. That was really a big boom of building products where styles changed and transitioned to more sort of modern 80s, contemporary era and it just the quality just was really cheap. Foundations were generally okay, but the framing particularly the framing just awful.

Why people single out the 1980s - Rapid speculative building in some markets: in boom periods some developers cut costs, used cheaper materials or rushed workmanship. - Widespread adoption of new materials/ techniques whose long-term behaviour was not yet fully proven (for example mass use of some particleboard/adhesives, new sealants, UPVC joinery, oriented-strand board (OSB), lightweight trusses). Some of these later showed durability or moisture problems in certain conditions. - Variable regulation/enforcement: building codes and inspection practices differed by jurisdiction and were often less stringent for energy, moisture control and workmanship than today. - Cost-cutting and modular/manufactured housing: manufactured/mobile homes and low-end speculative houses from the era often used lower-grade components. These factors mean some 1980s homes show more defects (moisture damage, joinery failures, adhesive breakdown, insulation or airtightness issues) than older or newer homes in particular regions. Where the 1980s housing often did not fare worse - Structural fundamentals (foundations, main loadbearing elements) are generally similar across many decades when built to code. - In some respects 1980s houses can be better than older stock: improved electrics (more circuits), newer plumbing materials replacing lead, and in some regions improved fire safety rules compared with pre-war stock.
