Crash Bandicoot turns 30 today. 30 years. Which is insane because I can still remember sitting there playing this as a kid like it was yesterday. And there was something about games back then that I never really thought about until now. You died. You fell off the edge. You messed up. Then you started over. That was it. There was always another life. Another try. Another chance to do it again. I think when you’re a kid you kind of assume real life works the same way. You don’t think about your friends not being around one day. Or the house you grew up in belonging to someone else. Or the stores you went to disappearing. Or your parents getting older. You definitely don’t think about childhood ending. You just assume all of it is gonna be there. Then one day you’re 30-something and half the stuff you thought would always exist… doesn’t. And what gets me is that you usually had no idea when the last time was. The last time everyone was together. The last summer that felt like summer. The last time you walked into a place that would eventually close. The last time something was just normal life before it became something you missed. I think about that a lot now. Not even because I want to go back and live there forever. I just wish I knew. I wish I knew which moments I should’ve looked around a little longer. Because we spent so much of childhood thinking there would always be another turn. And then you grow up and realize that isn’t really how it works. So happy 30th to Crash Bandicoot. Apparently a cartoon marsupial is the reason I’m thinking about the passage of time tonight.
