Marco Rubio’s White House role is now permanent. President Trump has made Rubio the permanent national security advisor, formalizing the role he has held on an interim basis since May 2025 while continuing to serve as secretary of state. That makes Rubio only the second person in U.S. history to hold both positions at the same time, following Henry Kissinger in the 1970s.
