Just One of the Guys (1985) Some 80s teen movies had complicated plots. This one starts with a very simple idea: Terry is convinced nobody takes her seriously as a journalist because she is a girl, so she decides to prove it by enrolling at another high school as a boy. Naturally, things get complicated almost immediately. 😄 Joyce Hyser plays Terry with just the right mix of confidence and awkwardness. Watching her learn how to walk, talk and behave like one of the guys gives the movie most of its comedy, but underneath all of that is a surprisingly sincere story about being judged before anyone actually sees what you can do. And then there is Buddy, played by Billy Jayne, who somehow manages to steal nearly every scene he appears in. 🎬 A fun bit of trivia: the basic idea was loosely inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, with its disguises, mistaken identities and romantic confusion. The movie simply moved that concept into an extremely 1985 American high school. Another great 80s detail is William Zabka. Just One of the Guys arrived only a year after The Karate Kid, and once again he plays the intimidating high school bully. For a while, nobody in Hollywood seemed better at making you instantly dislike the guy walking down the school hallway. 😄 The movie was filmed largely around Phoenix, Arizona, which also explains that bright, sun-baked look that separates it from so many California-set teen movies of the period. Big hair, school dances, questionable disguises, synth-heavy music and one of the most memorable reveals in 80s teen comedy. Just One of the Guys could only have come from this era. 📼 #JustOneOfTheGuys #JoyceHyser #80sMovies #80sNostalgia #TeenMovies
