Sometimes half an idea is a good enough excuse to start a new painting. I knew I wanted to try something new- two different colours meeting on one a single stroke. I also knew I wanted to paint a kitesurfing scene. The surfer himself is on the deep blue water and the kite is in the open air. He is isolated but also connected with his kite; divided by colour but united by the same stroke. Held together by an almost invisible set of thin ropes. At the time I was painting this artwork, I was listening to a podcast where the comparison of ‘Einsamkeit’ and ‘Zweisamkeit’ came up. These are the German terms for loneliness and two-getherness. It felt fitting to use a word that sounded like the english word ‘kite’ and to play with its meaning. Language, like art, can be used to create images by saying very little. My artworks are completely simple and yet so much can be implied. Or not. It could just be a simple scene of a lonely kitesurfer on a good day.
