Christa Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. Instead, the 50-year-old becomes the first death-row inmate ever to survive a lethal injection. Pike has spent decades on death row for the brutal 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed when Pike was just 18. Prosecutors say Pike and two others lured Slemmer away after Pike became convinced she was after her boyfriend. The attack lasted up to an hour, with Pike later admitting Slemmer begged them to stop. Court records say Pike then took a fragment of Slemmer’s crushed skull as a trophy, showed it to classmates along with her bloodstained sneakers and even brought the fragment to breakfast the next morning.
