The idea that sub-Saharan Africans are somehow “opportunistic savages” without a core moral code is an incredibly simplistic way to talk about an entire continent. Africa is home to thousands of peoples, languages, cultures and philosophical traditions. Concepts surrounding community, responsibility, honour, justice and social obligations exist across many African societies. Ubuntu is one well-known example: the idea that our humanity is connected to how we treat and support one another. Of course, African societies have experienced violence, raiding, warfare and wrongdoing just as societies everywhere have. Humans are capable of both incredible kindness and terrible acts. But if we used the same logic being applied here, we could judge every European as inherently immoral because of colonialism, slavery, conquest and atrocities committed throughout European history. That would obviously be ridiculous. History is far more complicated than “these people have no morals.” If you’re going to make sweeping claims about an entire continent, at least understand the cultures you’re talking about. #AfricanHistory #BlackTikTok #Africantiktok #africanculture #philosophy
