NEW: The World Health Organization is investigating reports of a second lab worker plague death in Russia, as the U.S. also presses for answers. The World Health Organization is probing Russia after a laboratory worker died from severe pneumonia after reports of a possible accidental exposure to pneumonic plague. Russian health authorities told the W.H.O. that no recent plague cases have been registered in the Irkutsk region and that testing of identified contacts found no high-threat pathogens. But questions remain. The W.H.O. is now seeking more information about what caused the worker’s illness, what pathogen prompted Russia’s public health response, and reports that a second laboratory employee developed pneumonia of an undetermined cause.
