How does your salary compare to other people your age in the UK? According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the median annual salary for full-time employees in 2025 was £39,039. But earnings vary significantly depending on age. For example, workers aged 22 to 29 had median annual earnings of £32,347, compared with £44,244 for those aged 40 to 49. And here’s something important. The figures show both the MEAN and MEDIAN salaries. The mean is the arithmetic average, which can be pushed upwards by very high earners. The median is the middle salary, meaning half of employees in that group earn more and half earn less. So which should you compare yourself against? I’d use the median. It gives you a better indication of what a typical full-time employee earns. Remember, these figures are before tax and relate to full-time employees, not everyone in the UK. They don’t include self-employed workers or part-time employees. And your salary isn’t the only measure of financial success. Your savings, debts, investments and cost of living matter too.
