It looks like somebody at Airbnb finally took a look at their hosts and said enough is enough. And Airbnb just sent out a memo to their hosts stating that they will no longer be able to require guests to strip beds, to start laundry, to take trash off site, or to wash and put away dishes as checkout tasks. And Airbnb announced these updates to its house rules policy and they are apparently aimed at limiting excessive checkout chores and standardising what host can require from guests just across the board, right? And under this new policy, which takes full effect on November 20th, 2026, hosts will not be able or allowed to ask guests to complete tasks that require significant effort or time or would typically be performed by a cleaner. Finally! Ha ha ha ha ha! Additionally, host may not restrict use of amenities that are advertised in their listing nor charge guests fines or penalties as AirCover already protects them from guest damage to their property. And get this, guests should be able to see all house rules and requests on the listing at the time of booking and no new rules or requests may be added after booking. And these changes come after years of complaints from travellers about being charged cleaning fees while also being expected to complete these lengthy chore lists before leaving. Um, and guests are obviously still expected to leave properties in reasonable condition, but host can no longer require guests to pay a cleaning fee on top of a full check out chore list. Um, and you know what, I just know that these Airbnb hosts that have TikTok pages that are dedicated to shaming their guests after checkout, they're just, like, screaming and punching the air right now. I know they are so angry. Also, after November 20th, Airbnb's might finally be usable again. Yay!
