So many people have been asking why did I choose ENT and so I'm going to answer today and I'm wearing this hat because I've been wearing my scrub cap all day and my hair is flat and disgusting so I can't have that on camera. So for those of you who don't know ENT is a surgical sub specialty that you can apply into after medical school and it stands for ear nose and throat surgery. It is also known as Odo Laryngology or Odo Rhino Laryngology, Odo meaning ear, rhino nose, laryn larynx. Um so study of those things. However there are a lot more subspecialties within ENT. So let me outline them now. You have otology and neuro otology, so study of the ear or ear surgery as well as ear slash brain surgery. Um so neurotologists work very closely with neurosurgeons on a lot of operations. Head and neck surgery which is head and neck cancer. You have facial plastic and reconstructive surgery so this includes both cosmetic facial plastic surgery as well as reconstructive surgery which a lot of times can be very involved surgery. So head and neck surgeons, facial plastic surgeons can both do a lot of those free flap surgeries and then on top of that facial plastic surgeons some are trained to do reanimation surgeries which means they take a paralyzed face um or a patient with a paralysis um and they are able to do different types of procedures of wide range of them to restore either movement or the appearance of movement in the face. So those are very complex and interesting procedures. Then we have laryngology which is surgery of the voice box and airway and then you have rhinology um which is surgery of the nose and then you have pediatric surgery. Pediatric ENT is its own fellowship too because Pediatric ENT problems can present and have very different pathologies or disease processes than adults and the pediatric airway is also very different from the adult airway. So the reason I went into ENT is because I loved the variety and I love the vast majority of this variety and how they work both in tandem as well as can be their own sub specialties within ENT. Feel like this variety keeps residency sort of moving faster as well for me because you get sort of a little bit of this a little bit of that. You have dedicated rotations of course but you know you're never on just one thing for too long and that's true for most specialties right but I always knew that I wanted to do surgery because growing up I always loved and enjoyed intricate hand work. So those are sort of the main reasons I chose ENT. Um I probably would be equally happy for other reasons you know in other surgical sub specialties or maybe even in non surgical sub specialties. Um who knows but this is the path I chose and we're here now so.
