I've lived in seven cities and five countries (Australia, UK, China, Japan, and USA). Here are my pros and cons of each... Japan (Tokyo) Pros: beautiful, clean, quirky, amazing food, easy to live a healthy lifestyle Cons: technologically outdated, unwelcoming-to- hostile toward foreign immigrants, work culture Perth (Australia) Pros: beaches, weather, lifestyle, is close-ish to Singapore Cons: expensive in a way only NYC and HK can really understand Australia (Sydney) Pros: 8/10 on every metric you can imagine Cons: clique like nowhere else I've lived, wonderful if you have money and tough if you don't, in the middle of nowhere (globally), tall poppy syndrome is alive and well Australia (Melbourne): Pros: the birthplace of Australian cafe culture and coffee reputation, culture and sport, the food Cons: miserable weather (yes, I said it) Australia (everywhere) Pros: access to healthcare, overall quality of life Cons: attitudes toward ambition, making it big here is like being the tallest of the seven dwarves China (Shanghai) Pros: probably the most progressive and ambitious city in the world, private healthcare is 11/10, hustle is like nowhere else, unbelievable history and culture, food is epic Cons: air quality (tho getting better), surveillance, ever- changing attitudes toward foreigners, hard to live a healthy lifestyle Gratuitous China pic because it is such a varied country... And another... OK last China pic UK (Bristol) Pros: beautiful, quaint, quite walkable, fantastic access to Europe very, very cheap (I once caught a flight to Madrid for £8 return), summers are amazing Cons: miserable to take long haul flights through London, healthcare system can be fiddly, winters are long and dark USA (New York) Pros: the reputation of NYC attracts the best in the world (in almost every field), cinematic daily pinch-me moments, hustle and ambition is admired and respected Cons: rides on its reputation of having a hustle culture but is sluggish compared to other cities, cost of living, dirty, often feels unsafe Oh but the Central Park runs... USA (bonus) Pros: just so many opportunities everywhere, anything-is-possible feeling Cons: systemically (structurally?) problematic for immigrants of every skin color, confusing and inaccessible healthcare, comically outdated financial services, difficult to live a healthy life owing to food chain issues, poor public health education and systems, everyone for themselves attitude What did I miss / get wrong?
