new york. $100. that's all i had. what do you mean? i landed in new york, slept in the park and showered at the ymca. someone heard my story and sent me to a shelter for runaways. in the shelter, i heard people speaking persian. they told me: "you're not staying here. come to queens with us." they got me a job selling clothes in a boutique. a diner owner saw me and asked what i did. he then connected me to the union and i got work in a garment center. so i worked two lives: electrician during the day. boutique at night. then one sunday on orchard street... i saw a 40s/50s bathing suit that had a 'tube'. i bought a dozen, $2 each. i put them on the counter. women wanted them instantly. that's when i knew: this wasn't just a cute idea. i tried to get a booth at a boutique show. they told me: apply in six months. so i saw a back door... and i snuck in. i went floor to floor pinning tube tops on walls. guards kept telling me to leave. i kept going. i walked out that day with 250,000+ orders.
