Victoria and David Beckham have finally spoken about Brooklyn Beckham. Today is Brooklyn's 27th birthday and the pair shared happy birthday messages on their social media. From a PR perspective, this is something that had to happen. In my opinion, any good publicist would have advised doing this and here is why. Tabloid journalists would have been ready and waiting to post a story today, whether they commented or not. If they hadn't posted on Brooklyn's birthday, the tabloids would have posted stories about how they hadn't, with largely negative headlines and putting them in a not great light. But because they have posted, especially with messaging saying we love you, the media have covered the story in a much more favorable light. A lot of the messaging is about how it's emotional and heartbreaking. So the posts are really garnering sympathy with the public, and especially with British mums and dads who make up the majority of Victoria and David's audience. Brooklyn made it super clear in his statement that he only wants to communicate through lawyers, so this act of defiance from Victoria and David positions them as authentically loving their son more than any legal ramifications. From a PR perspective, this is a quick, easy win for them that puts them in favor of the public. I'd also like to think it comes from an authentic place as well, but I have no possible way of knowing that. I have no connection with these two. But hopefully this shines a bit of a light of what happens behind the scenes from a PR perspective when scandals like this break out.
