I want to show you what the average American actually looks like because I think it will surprise you. The median household income in America is $83,730. That's two people often bringing in a combined income of about $83,000 before taxes. The median American household has $8,000 in their bank total across checking, savings, everything, and more than half of Americans can't afford a $1,000 emergency. Now here's where it gets interesting. The average 401k balance across all ages is $148,000. That sounds pretty decent, right? But the median, meaning what most people actually have, is just $38,000. That gap exists because a small number of people have really high balances and it brings the average up. And a quarter of Americans, 25%, have zero retirement savings. Not a little, zero. So if you have anything saved, you're already ahead of millions of people. But women, we gotta chat because the median retirement savings for a woman is $50,000 compared to our male counterparts, which is $157,000. Women are out here earning a lot of money, but the gap in terms of what we are investing is significant. So if you're sitting here feeling behind, these numbers should tell you something. You're not as far off as you might think. Most people are working with less than you probably assumed, and getting from where you are to where you want to be isn't about luck, it's about having a plan and executing it.
