There is one Fidelity fund most people never heard of that gives you around 2,700 companies in a single buy, and it costs almost nothing. So most people know about the S&P 500. 500, the biggest U.S. companies. Great fund, I talk about it all the time. But it only covers about 80% of the total U.S. stock market by market cap. The other 20%, mid cap and small cap companies, is where a lot of the growth potential actually lives in, and most people are completely missing it. So I started buying FSKAX, Fidelity's total market index fund. Around 3,700 U.S. companies, large, mid, and small cap, all in one fund. That expense ratio is 0.015%. That is 15 cents per $1,000 invested per year. Historically, it has returned around 10% a year before inflation with dividends reinvested. And recently, it has been keeping on pace with a slight edge or outperforming the S&P 500. If you already own FXAIX or VOO, then FSKAX gives you the same large cap exposure plus mid and small cap companies on top. Some people might swap one for the other. One fund, the entire U.S. market.
