Most people think VOO gives them 500 companies worth of diversification. 35 to 40 cents of every dollar goes into just 10 companies. 8 of them are all making the same bet on AI. That is concentration. Know what you own before you keep buying. #investing #voo #PersonalFinance #wealthbuilding Most people think VOO gives them 500 companies. Here is what it actually gives you. And when you see what eight of those top 10 companies have in common, you will never look at your index fund the same way. For every dollar that you put inside of VOO right now, 35 to 40 cents goes into just 10 companies. Not 500, 10. Those companies are Nasdaq, Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Boadcom, Meta, Tesla, Berkshire, Hathaway and JP Morgan. Set aside, Berkshire and JP Morgan. The remaining eight, every single one of them are spending agreeably on the same thing. AI data centers, chips, models, cloud infrastructure, billions being deployed right now into one technology. And when you buy VOO thinking that you are diversified across the US economy, what you are actually holding is a significant concentrated bet on AI playing out exactly the way these companies are pricing it in. That is not necessarily wrong. AI may deliver everything that these valuations are pricing in. But it is worth knowing because diversification means spreading your risk across different outcomes and when 35 cents of every dollar flows into eight companies all making the same bet that is concentration. So what do you do with this information? Well, you do not sell your index funds. You do not try to time the market. You get aware and you look at your full portfolio. You ask whether you have any exposure outside of US large cap tech. International funds, small and mid cap, a cash position that gives you options if the market corrects. BOO is still a great fund. I still own it. But knowing what you actually own is the first step to investing within attention. Follow for more.
