What do a Chinese water deer, ancient philosophy, and bimbos all have in common? The modern practice of bimbo stoicism. What is bimbo stoicism? Is it just another internet trend where feckless and narcissistic girls are running with buzzwords that they don't really understand? Do they even understand philosophy at all? Are young women just being annoying as they always are? Let's talk about it because I think bimbo stoics much more acutely understand the philosophy than many of the modern bro stoics who have bastardized stoicism. Originally coined in a viral series of videos by creator @babushka.en, the main ethos of bimbo stoicism is that women should remove their emotional attachment to societal standards and move towards self-acceptance. The core content format that is driving its virality is women comparing themselves to animals. Babushka says that bimbo stoics should identify their twin animal to fully detach themselves from the societal standards of beauty because your true beauty can only be found in nature. When animals are creatures that reflect a woman's outer identity but also her inner aura. Through bimbo stoicism, women are encouraged to explore their individuality, obscure animals, ones that are not necessarily cute and even kind of feral. The name refers to seemingly conflicting views of the world: bimboism and stoicism. Bimboism is the playful and ironic reclamation of bimbo aesthetics in recent times. It's an acknowledgement for women who are shrewdly observing that it does not matter if you are a very serious woman or a bimbo, we culturally do not view women as people. Men are people. Women? Women are wives, women are mothers, women are daughters, we are sluts, we are shrews, we are bimbos. It is permissible for a woman to be an archetype of a person, but she is never allowed to just be a person. And so bimboism says if that's true, you might as well just have fun and ask not what you can do for the patriarchy, but what the patriarchy can do for you. Bimbo aesthetics are both a form of survival and play. Now, stoicism is a much older philosophical ideal that in its most simplest terms says that you cannot control the outcomes, you can only control how you react to those outcomes. And each person should act in pursuit of wisdom and virtue and temperance and discipline and justice and yada yada yada. It makes sense to me that women would be attracted to stoicism. We are losing political, social, labor, economic power in most pockets of the world. And women are losing the most control of what it means to live in our bodies. Obviously, we live in a post-Roe America. Beauty standards now have us competing with robots. There's been a resurgence of ultra-thin aesthetics and we are now in an all-out arms race of who can be the hottest with plastic surgery becoming increasingly normative amongst young women. It makes sense to me that a philosophy like stoicism would become increasingly popular to young women when so much of their life feels out of their control. Doubly so when it's being remixed under the bimbo wrapper to specifically address self-acceptance with your beauty. Now, some might ask is bimbo stoicism dehumanizing because it encourages women to see themselves as animals in order to accept themselves? And I would argue that the more prudent question is what does it say about us that human frameworks have failed women so completely? When every available model of womanhood comes with an endless list of prescriptions of what it means to be a good woman, maybe looking to a quokka who has never once thought about her stomach feels entirely logical.
