There's a girl on here building a company called Computer Angel, which is prototyping hair clips that have recording devices built into them, and I think it is so fascinating. In my last video essay, I talked about the Cyber Deck trend and how that was a movement mostly being led by women and girls as a concerted effort away from patriarchal uses of technology. Women and girls are building their own devices that are outside of the gaze of big tech, largely being led by like evil billionaire men. It's the girly, the playful, the expressive aesthetic that has captured the imagination and the desires of girls to be building this type of technology, as most technology today looks really boring. It's simply be too frivolous for big tech to make something in a very girlhood aesthetic. I think Computer Angel is another signal of where technology is headed, and again, it is mostly being led by girls. The hair clip she's built is functionally very simple. You put it in your hair, it has a very obvious large camera in the front. The camera being so big and bulky and obvious, I think is a very intentional aesthetic decision. One of the big critiques of the Meta glasses, because of course they were made and designed by men, are now being used by men to be creepy towards women. So to see a young woman, the demographic who is largely being targeted and affected by the misuse of technologies like Meta glasses, creating a product that is functionally very similar, both the aesthetic and the safety features are designed for women in mind. And of course, the men are mad about this because they're talking about how this isn't even innovative technology. I mean, is innovative technology only as good as the design behind it? And as technology continues to advance without women, people of color, LGBTQ people, disabled people at the table, the design features are falling flat. AirTags are being used to stalk women. Deepfakes are almost universally used for non-consensual corn of women. User safety features on apps like this are not designed to keep women safe. And of course, the Meta glasses, which look indistinguishable from any other pair of glasses, making them particularly insidious when a user decides to jailbreak them to remove the feature that shows you that you're being recorded. Computer Angel shows us that the same tools that build a prison can also build a church, and when you have women designing technology, it can actually be really like useful or fun or playful, or at the very least, not harmful.
